Autumn brings out the best in lawns. After a summer of dry spells, grass gets fresh moisture from cooler nights and increased rain, making it softer and more fragrant. Dogs often crave this lush grass, which is full of fibre and can help with digestion. Experts note that the grass is more enticing due to its smell and texture at this time of year. Some dogs simply enjoy trying something new off the menu.
The classic theory that dogs eat grass because they're sick doesn't quite fit most cases. Only about 10 to 20 percent of grass-eating dogs actually throw up afterward. For the majority, it is just a seasonal snack… the canine version of enjoying a fresh salad.
Our Grass-Eating Club
The group walk made for one fantastic scene. Instead of sniffing, trotting, and playing, every dog in the line was determined to chow down. It was as if they had all coordinated a secret plan: forget fetch, today we graze! Some joked about bringing ranch dressing next time (Rocky’s idea). The dogs were so focused that we humans had to wait patiently or tug gently just to get moving again.
Moments like these always serve up good questions. Are the dogs bored? Is grass somehow tastier in September? Are biscuits getting snubbed for roughage?
Is It Something to Worry About?
Most vets agree there is no need to panic if dogs eat grass during fall walks. As long as the grass has not been treated with chemicals or pesticides, the odd munch is considered harmless. If a dog keeps vomiting or seems unwell, there might be reason to check with the vet. But in most cases, it is a quirky, seasonal habit.
Fun Facts and Funnies
Canadian dogs are especially enthusiastic about autumn grass. The fresh growth and the cool weather combine to make each blade pretty irresistible.
New park challenge: Count how many pups munch grass during a walk. Loser brings Tim Hortons next time—just keep the coffee for the humans… oh, and I prefer hot chocolate!
Why We Love Fall Walks
There is something special about cool weather, colourful leaves, and the unpredictable antics of a dog. Whether they are zooming around or stuck in a salad bar, these moments make autumn walks worth the trip. It is part of the joy of having a dog—the laughter, the curiosity, and the stories that you tell fellow owners year after year.
Grass-eating in the fall might seem odd, but it is just another reason to enjoy the season, snap a photo, and keep the stories coming.
Embracing the Season
As we embrace the beauty of fall, let’s remember to cherish these little moments with our furry friends. Each walk is an adventure, filled with laughter and surprises. So, the next time you see your dog munching on grass, just smile and think of it as their way of celebrating the season.
